Founded in 1954, Capital Normal University (CNU) dates back to 1905 when Tongzhou Normal University was established. As a top university included in China’s Double First-Class Initiative and a province-ministry co-constructed university co-constructed by Beijing and the Ministry of Education, CNU offers various disciplines, including literature, science, engineering, management, law, education, foreign language and art. Over the past 60 years, CNU has cultivated more than 200,000 senior talents. It is an important base for talent cultivation in Beijing.
CNU boasts 31 faculties and centers, namely the School of Literature, the School of History, the College of Political Science and Law, the College of Education, the College of Teacher Education, the Capital Institute of Basic Education Development and Research, the School of Psychology, the College of Foreign Languages, the College of Marxism Education, the School of Management, the Music College, the College of Fine Arts, the School of Mathematical Sciences, the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, the College of Life Sciences, the College of Resource Environment and Tourism, the Information Engineering College, the Elementary Education College, the College of Preschool Education, the Program in General Education, the School of Continuing Education, the Jingjiang College, the College of International Education, the Research Institute of the Culture of Calligraphy of China, the Honors College, the College of Traditional Chinese Culture Education, the Research Center for Aesthetic Education, the Institute of Cultural Studies, the Academy for Interdisciplinary Studies and so on. It also has the Teaching and Research Department of College English and the Teaching and Research Department of Physical Education. CNU offers 59 programs for undergraduates. An all-round and multi-level education system covering undergraduate education, postgraduate education, doctoral education, post-doctoral education, full-time education, adult education and international education has been formed in CNU. It has totally 28,191 students of all kinds.
In 2003, CNU was declared as Outstanding University in Undergraduate Teaching in the undergraduate teaching evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education. So far, CNU has 7 national characteristic programs, 10 municipal characteristic programs, 35 programs approved for the construction of national first-class undergraduate program and 14 approved for the construction of municipal first-class undergraduate program. All its traditional education programs have been approved for the construction of national first-class undergraduate program and all colleges and schools open for undergraduates have programs approved for the construction of national first-class undergraduate program.
CNU strives to cultivate outstanding talents. There are 3 bases for the Top Student Training Program 2.0 for Basic Disciplines initiated by the Ministry of Education, namely History, Mathematics and Chinese Language and Literature. Its middle education and primary education were included into the Excellent Teacher Training Program initiated by the Ministry of Education. At the same time, relying on 4 advantageous disciplines (literature, science (engineering), art and education), it has built a three-level (state-university-school) outstanding top talent training system to continuously promote higher development of students.
With more than 14.9 million books and documents collected, CNU’s library is one of the backbone libraries of documents and materials in China. CNU has built a digital campus construction center. A stable, mature and efficient campus network is fully accessible. In addition, there is a national standard plastic sports stadium, gymnasium, badminton hall, swimming pool and other sports venues.
